new parking area

The county made us paint handicapped parking lines in my driveway for the Boss Mouse renovation.  Looks so bad.

walking man

almost any morning that I drive to Traverse City, I pass this man walking on the side of the road out of Kingsley.  I've seen him as long as I've lived here - he wears hunting orange and is always wearing earphones.  I'm sure he lives nearby, and must walk each morning to town and home or something

and the orphans make 9

Some students from Kingsley High School witnessed a fox kill a Mother cottontail rabbit, leaving three orphaned babies. They managed to catch two of them, and left them at my farm for care.  They are doing pretty well - I made them a nest in the shower stall of my downstairs bathroom.  They've been here for 24 hours and I am managing to feed them milk with an eye dropper.  I estimate their age to be appx 3 weeks - I will do my best to help them make it to young adulthood! They are the cutest little creature you've ever seen

the predator

A fox took a chicken while they were free ranging last week, so I haven'y been letting them out unless I am outside to supervise. There was always a fox in the woods, and there will always be a fox in the woods. This morning the fox was camped out right beside the hen yard fence.  I used the best protection I have against him - Max and Cozy, who ran down and chased him off.  I can't blame him for being a fox, but I will make it as hard as possible for him to find another meal at my farm.

goodbye, old kettle

Last week we drove the old kettle down to a farmer in the thumb area of Michigan - it's been in my driveway for almost two years - he plans to use it to store feed corn and maple sap
