day on the bay

Power friends Megan and Jesse invited me out on their boat for a day on the Grand Traverse bay yesterday.  We had an awesome time!

wild turkey visitors

A pair of female wild turkeys and their young passed through the side yard yesterday.  They were sleek and beautiful.  If you look closely you can see 2 of the babies at the edge of the flowers in this picture.

Does this make me look shady?

I picked these in the woods today

And found a beautiful poem about it:

Blackberry-picking
Late August, given heavy rain and sun
For a full week, the blackberries would ripen.
At first, just one, a glossy purple clot
Among others, red, green, hard as a knot.
You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet
Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it
Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for
Picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger
Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots
Where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our
boots. Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills
We trekked and picked until the cans were full
Until the tinkling bottom had been covered
With green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned
Like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered
With thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's.
We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre.
But when the bath was filled we found a fur,
A rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache.
The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush
The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour.
I always felt like crying. It wasn't fair
That all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot.
Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not.

I planted two annabelle hydrangea bushes out by the historic sign in front of the farm.  They have beautiful and gigantic snowball blossoms.

the train

The Great Lakes Central railroad tracks literally run across my driveway.  Until this morning, I had never seen any big trains pass, just a parade of putt-putt motor cars once.  Two trains came by today, and I took this video of a locomotive as it passed the farm.  Many people wouldn't want to be so close to them, I love that trains sometimes roll through the front yard.  It was so loud!

separated at birth

A friend was over yesterday and pointed out that Bunny Lee looks exactly like the rabbit from Watership Down - don't you agree?

mutant carrot

Look at this weird carrot I picked from the garden - it looks like its arms and legs are crossed.

the taming of the flock

I've been wanting to get the chickens tame enough to where I might pet them, or hold one in my lap.  When I worked in Maine, I had a chicken fall asleep while I was petting it once.  My girls are mellow around me but not if I try to touch them, so I figured step one in getting them used to my hands is to hold something they can't resist:  food.  Here, Whitey, Silver and Goldie all stepped right up - we're off to a good start.  There's one of the Owl sisters in the background - check out her fluffy cheeks!

Scorpius

The constellation Scorpius has been clear and enormous in the Western sky the past few nights

I like the story of Scorpio, too:

In Greek Mythology the myths associated with Scorpio almost invariably also contain a reference to Orion.  According to one of these myths, Orion boasted to goddess Artemis and her mother, Leto, that he would kill every animal on the earth.  Although Artemis was known to be a hunter herself, she offered protection to all creatures.  Artemis and her mother Leto sent a scorpion to deal with Orion.  The pair battled and the scorpion killed Orion. However, the contest was apparently a lively one that caught the attention of the king of the gods Zeus, who later raised the scorpion to heaven and afterwards, at the request of Artemis, did the same for Orion to serve as a reminder for mortals to curb their excessive pride.

Know the Trees

The Traverse City area has some great thrift shopping, and today I found a little book, published in 1919, entitled 'Tree Guide'.  It's has a great opening sentiment, plus beautiful color plates.  I love the old language and all for 5¢, for real.

Pucci has been exhibiting hilarious dog behavior since moving to the country: digging random holes, and burying her toys and dog treats outside.

the baby blue jay

Some blue jays have built a nest in a tree right beside my front door, so every time Pucci or I go in or out, they get really upset, and fly around screeching, or literally try to dive-bomb Pucci (they haven't tried to dive-bomb me - - yet).  Last night I was laying in bed looking out the window and heard a lot of rustling in the trees.  I watched and saw the adult blue jays flying around, and then one of the babies perched as close to my window as you could get.  It looked just like this picture (I didn't take this picture) and sat there for about 10 minutes, just looking around, unaware of me watching.  I could have reached out and touched it.  Blue jays have bad reputations because they are boisterous and aggressive, but I think they are such beautiful birds, and definitely have the coolest hairstyle.  Watching that little bird was the only thing in the world last night.
