free beer! (ingredients.)

Wild hops from Dell Road

About 3 gallons of fragrant, beautiful buds.  I love lupulin!

our daily

There were several artisan bread groups representing at Common Ground this year - I came home really inspired to bake all of my own bread from now on. I made this loaf of oatmeal-flax-sunflower bread.  Make your own!  It is so much fresher and better and full of the goodness from your hands.

Belfast, Maine

I had some exceptional beer in charming Belfast, Maine at the coolest little spot I had been to pretty much all year.  Three Tides raw bar & restaurant looked like a pop-up venue: gravel floor, trash picked mismatched/perfectly matched furniture, completely constructed on a small port-side lot.  They strung up vintage lamps, had an outdoor fireplace and boules bowling lane, perfect jazz music and a gigantic pile of oyster shells as a display (below).  I sort of captured the pinky marina ambiance from my table in the photo above - it was a magical place

Maine is my second home, a place I feel a deep connection to.  I apprenticed at Little Falls Farm when I was learning cheese making, and just spent a great long weekend there

a weekend in the Pine Tree State

I'm heading to Maine and will write when I get back!

stinky update

My experimental stinky cheeses are coming along nicely - I started my Little Piros wheels a few weeks ago, and here they are today - they smell like bacon.

RIP trusty blue

The carcass of my beloved '94 Pathfinder.  I got in a wreck last week - I'm banged up but OK.  Man, I'll miss my car - she had just flipped 250K miles.

When you hit a cheese maker's car, it bleeds milk. I had just picked up 40 gallons right before the 16 year old driver pulled into oncoming traffic.  US31 and I were covered in milk.

pickle OCD

Dear Sue,

I used to think your blog was interesting, but now all you write about is making pickles and it's boring.

Love,

You

that's entertainment

My Dad told me that my Hungarian Grandma used to enjoy professional wrestling on TV when he was growing up in Detroit.  I had never heard that family lore before.
