The Happy Mushroom: James Beard

Some friends and I had dinner at The Cook's House restaurant last night.  It's a great place, and in the dining room they have a large bookshelf of the chef's personal collection of cookbooks, old and new.  There are several authored by James Beard, who was around before Julia Child, and just as legendary.  He is considered the father of American-style gourmet cooking.  His books are easy to find at second hand stores, and his recipes and advice on cooking is timeless.  He looks like a big, smiling mushroom.  Look at the wall display above - nothing says bon appétit like taxidermy pheasants.
