The Lantern People

I found an antique book published in  1882 entitled The Lantern People:  An Allegory for The Young Folks.  I think it was put out by a church, but I love the message and the imagery.

The book talks about being a good person, and how within us we can choose to have a hornet or a butterfly.  The two men in the illustration have a dog and a wolf within their hearts, and when they meet on the street the beasts begin fighting.  It's a beautiful little book with a timeless idea .

Wonderful - I wonder what year it was written! One of my favorite things is to look at how books for children have evolved - I'm guessing this is early 1900's??
